Chore Dao: A Night of Mujra and Celebration

Time: 7 PM – 11 PM

Location: Crenshaw Yoga and Dance Studio — 5426 Crenshaw Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90043

Mujra Night will be a collaboration between Satrang and South Asian Youth Movement (SAYM). Satrang serves the South Asian LGBTQ community by promoting awareness, acceptance, and empowerment through social, educational, and advocacy-related events. We envision an inclusive and visible community in which South Asian LGBTQ-identified people feel whole and heard. SAYM was started with the aim to create a space that centers Bengali and South Asian youth in LA. We’re very excited about this collaboration and opportunity to create together.

Satrang’s Mujra Night has become legendary in the Southern California LGBTQ community and we are bringing it back this June! If you have not attended before, our Mujra Night is one where we celebrate the queering of gender identity with a South Asian flare.

Food will be served to nourish our soul.

A vibrant debut novel, set in Brooklyn and Bangladesh, Bright Lines follows three young women and one family struggling to make peace with secrets and their past.

“The miracles in Bright Lines are the understated moments of family telepathy. . . . An understated queer coming-of-age, a study of how much work it is to be a family, and a snapshot of a disappearing Brooklyn, set against the ghosts of the past, and a search for home.”—NPR.org

For the month of June we’ll be reading Cereus Blooms at Night by Shani Mootoo. Please read prior to attending!

Cereus Blooms at Night is an exquisite cross-generational history filled with thrilling passion and alluring mystery. Set in the fictional Caribbean town of Paradise, Cereus Blooms at Night unveils the mystery surrounding Mala Ramchandin, an aging, notoriously crazy woman suspected of murdering her father. When a judge finds Mala unfit to stand trial, she is delivered, frail and mute, to the Paradise Alms House and into the care of Tyler, a vivacious male nurse, who becomes the unlikely storyteller of Mala’s extraordinary life. In luminous, sensual prose, Mootoo explores identity, gender, and violence in a celebration of our capacity to love despite cruelty and despair.
