What have I been invited to?

Satrang’s Mujra Night has become legendary in the Southern California LGBTQ community, and we are bringing it back this month! If you have not attended before, our Mujra Night is one where we celebrate the queering of gender identity with a South Asian flare.

This year, Mujra Night will be a collaboration between Satrang and South Asian Youth Movement (SAYM). Satrang serves the South Asian LGBTQ community by promoting awareness, acceptance, and empowerment through social, educational, and advocacy-related events. SAYM created a space that centers Bengali and South Asian youth in LA, and during this event, they will be sharing performances from their workshops during this year. After this event, SAYM will continue to work with Bengali and South Asian youth in Koreatown the rest of this year and throughout 2019.

We’re very excited about this collaboration and opportunity to create together, and to create more solidarity within our community!

What will this cost me? Nothing, per say. We are a non-profit organization after all.

Join us to send community members to the NQAPIA Conference from July 26 – 29! Suggested donation is $10, but NO ONE WILL BE TURNED AWAY FOR LACK OF FUNDS. This event is open to the public!

Donations get you the best tacos in town and drinks will also be available in exchange for your donation! As an incentive, NQAPIA will match dollar for dollar up to $500. If you’re able, please donate generously.

What does NQAPIA do?

NQAPIA develops LGBTQ API leadership, builds the capacity of local organizations, invigorates grassroots organizing and advocacy, and challenges anti-LGBTQ prejudice, racism, and anti-immigrant bias. Satrang is a proud member of NQAPIA.

Your support means the world to us. Don’t miss out! We hope you will join us to help continue building community, and creating a culture of authenticity and empowerment for the South Asian LGBTQ community in Southern California!

“The miracles in Bright Lines are the understated moments of family telepathy. . . . An understated queer coming-of-age, a study of how much work it is to be a family, and a snapshot of a disappearing Brooklyn, set against the ghosts of the past, and a search for home.”—NPR.org

For the month of June we’ll be reading Cereus Blooms at Night by Shani Mootoo. Please read prior to attending!

Cereus Blooms at Night is an exquisite cross-generational history filled with thrilling passion and alluring mystery. Set in the fictional Caribbean town of Paradise, Cereus Blooms at Night unveils the mystery surrounding Mala Ramchandin, an aging, notoriously crazy woman suspected of murdering her father. When a judge finds Mala unfit to stand trial, she is delivered, frail and mute, to the Paradise Alms House and into the care of Tyler, a vivacious male nurse, who becomes the unlikely storyteller of Mala’s extraordinary life. In luminous, sensual prose, Mootoo explores identity, gender, and violence in a celebration of our capacity to love despite cruelty and despair.
